GREELEY, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University sophomore
John Daniel went 4-2 and advanced to the consolation semifinals in the 157-pound bracket, leading the Colorado Mesa University wrestling squad at the University of Northern Colorado Open, held Saturday in the Bears' Bank of Colorado Arena.
Â
Daniel bounced back from an opening round loss to Jed Loveless with a 3-1 win over Maverick teammate
Jason Romero after receiving a medical forfeit victory. He then knocked off Air Force's Terence Perkins by major decision (14-4) before avenging his loss to Loveless, a University of Wyoming unattached wrestler in the consolation quarterfinals by a 5-2 score. Daniel's run through the consolation bracket was then stopped by Tyler Kinn of Northern Colorado, 9-3.
Â
Daniel was one of ten Mavericks representing the team while another nine other CMU wrestlers competed unattached. That group was led by freshman
Nolan Krone, who went 3-2 with three victories by pin the 184-pound bracket. He also advanced to the consolation semifinals. One of Krone's victories was over teammate
Dillon Ryan, who went 2-2 on the day.
Â
Hunter Mooring also finished 2-2 in the 197-pound bracket while competing unattached.
Â
CMU's other multiple-match winner was
Donnie Negus, who went 2-2 at 174 pounds.
