RMAC Tournament Round 1 vs. UCCS Oct. 31:
Tournament History:
Since 2003 the Mavericks have qualified for the RMAC tournament eight times (including this season). However, the team has only made it to the tournament final once over those 14 seasons. That was back in 2011 when the team lost 2-0 against Colorado School of Mines (CSM) after defeating the reigning champions Regis University the game prior. 2011 was also the last year when the Mavericks made it out of the first round of the tournament.
Can Mavericks win on the road again:
CMU and UCCS played one other time this year back on Sept. 24. The Mavericks won that game on the road 1-0 for the team's fifth win of the season. The lone goal came in the final minute of regulation when
Halie Bergeron beat her defender and was able to fire in a shot from the front of the goal. Despite the win, the Mavericks were doubled in shots in the matchup (22-11) and had two fewer shots on goal than the Mountain Lions (6-4).
Mountain Lions rolled:
Following the loss to the Mavericks the Mountain Lions kicked it into high gear. The team won eight of its final nine games to finish the season with a 12-4 record. This included a win on the road against No. 6 CSM in overtime 2-1. UCCS outscored their opponents 22-7 in those final nine games. The lone loss came against No. 16 Regis where the Mountain Lions fell at home 2-1.
Abundance of goals:
After only being able to score three goals in five games, the Mavericks have put up 12 goals in their last two games of the regular season. CMU put up seven against New Mexico Highlands before finished the season against Black Hills State on the road where the Mavericks won the game 5-0. In those games,
Alexis Allard has three goals and an assist for a grand total of seven points in two games.
Players to watch:
For the Mavericks, when Allard and
Zoe Peterson are able to score the Mavericks have done well. The two of them are the top two goal scorers for CMU. Allard finished the regular season with six (which tied her for fourth in the conference) and Peterson finished with four. As for the Mountain Lions, the player to watch is Tara Patterson. She is third in the conference with seven goals on the year and is sixth in total points with 15.
Tournament bracket:
The Mavericks claimed the sixth seed in the RMAC tournament over the weekend. That means that if CMU can win the game against UCCS, they will be set up against the winner of the 2-7 matchup CSM and Western. CSM has won the RMAC tournament the last six years dating back to 2011. The last team to win the tournament outside of the Orediggers was Regis in 2010.
