Buhr's Pin Seals Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It came down to the final bout of the evening and Jason Buhr's pin at 174 pounds sealed the win for Colorado Mesa, defeating 12th ranked Cal Baptist 20-17 on Thursday evening in Brownson Arena in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling dual.

Buhr trailed Dominic Kincaid 4-3 nearing the end of the second period with Kincaid accumulating nearly three minutes of riding time.

After earning an escape, Buhr locked up and threw Kincaid to his back on the edge of the mat. The official slapped the mat for a pin at the 4:31 mark of the bout.

The evening started out at 174 where Bruno Nicoletti earned a decision over ninth-ranked Nolan Kistler 10-7. Nicoletti led 10-0 after the first period and held on for the decision win. Colorado Mesa was docked a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct following the bout.

Cal Baptist picked up three straight wins with two coming for bonus points to make the dual 11-2.

Sophomore Tommy Tawata earned a 4-2 decision at 125 pounds to keep Colorado Mesa in the dual.

The Lancers secured two more wins at 133 pounds and 141 pounds to move their lead to 17-5.

All that was left for Colorado Mesa was the trio of Nick Swanson (149), Payton Tawater (157) and Buhr (174).

The senior, Swanson picked up an 8-3 decision over Daxton Gordon of Cal Baptist to get the dual score to 17-8. Swanson trailed early but earned a pair of near falls and the riding point for the decision victory.

Redshirt freshman Payton Tawater followed at 157 pounds. Tawater secured a pin after scoring a reversal that sent Lancer Slater Johnson to his back. He tightened his grip and earned the pin at the 2:04 mark of the first period, cutting the Cal Baptist lead to just three points.

That led to Buhr's heroics.

The two teams split the bouts with each earning five bout wins.

Colorado Mesa will travel to Gunnison for the Tracy Borah Duals on Saturday.
