GOLDEN, Colo. - A night after falling in eight of the ten matches, Colorado Mesa rebounded by winning seven of the ten bouts in a 28-9 win over the upstart Colorado Mines Orediggers on Thursday afternoon in Volk Gym in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual.
The night didnt start out so hot. 125 pounder Tommy Tawata led 14-3 in the second period and wound up falling in overtime 16-14 to Oredigger Matt Lavengood to give Mines the early 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore
Juaquin Olivas earned his first dual victory as a Maverick with a 6-4 overtime decision of Noah Au-Yeung at 133 pounds to even the dual at 3-3.
Mines reclaimed the lead after a decision victory at 141 pounds but Colorado Mesa would rattle off three straight wins including two by bonus points for a 16-6 advantage.
Redshirt freshman
Payton Tawater kept his streak going with a first round pin of Ethan Ruby at 157 pounds. Tawater's last loss came all the back on December 18 in the Reno Tournament of Champions when he fell to nationally ranked Colt Shorts of Div. I Cal Poly.
Sophomore
Jason Buhr backed Tawater up with a 16-8 major decision victory at 165 pounds over Keenan Willits.
After the Mavericks fell at 174 pounds, they claimed the final three bouts of the night to claim the dual meet victory.
Austin Gaun won by technical fall at 184 pounds followed by a major decision victory by Jareb Aziz at 197 pounds.
True freshman
Clayton Voytilla got a taste of success with a 5-1 victory in the 285 pound bout. Voytilla wrestled his most sound match of the season defeating Oredigger Jake Feldman for his second dual victory of the season.
The Mavericks will be off until the Battle in Brownson on February 2 when they host arch rival Western State at 7pm.
