RIVERSIDE, Calif. – No. 11 Colorado Mesa and No. 7 Cal Baptist went toe-to-toe on Friday evening in Van Dyne Gym as two of the top teams in Div. II. The two teams split the ten bouts with each side winning five but Cal Baptist secured a pin and a major decision to win the dual 19-15.
The Mavericks started the night off by winning three of the first four duals dropping the 133 bout.
Jonathon Stelling opened up the dual with a 10-3 win over Zak McKenna of Cal Baptist. Stelling defeated McKenna for the second time in as many weekends and secured four takedowns in the win.
Second ranked
Daniel Salazar earned a 7-5 overtime decision over Peter Cunningham at 141 pounds. Salazar picked up a takedown just 15 seconds into the overtime period.
At 149 pounds,
Drew Schumann picked up a big 5-1 decision victory over Bradford Gerl. Gerl's lone point of the match came on a riding point as he rode Schumann for the whole second period. Schumann earned a takedown and a quick two-point nearfall less then 30 seconds into the match.
Randy Boerner wrestled for the first time in over two weeks and earned a 10-4 win over Christian Smith at 174 pounds.
In one of the most exciting matchups of the night,
Marcus Haughian picked up a 4-1 overtime victory over Paul Head. Haughian earned a penalty point and a reversal when it was his turn to choose down in the overtime period.
The Mavericks will head to NorCal tonight for a bout with San Francisco State tomorrow afternoon at 3:00pm.
