Softball Opens Season in Las Vegas

Colorado Mesa will open the 2016 season at the Las Vegas Desert Stinger Tournament this weekend. CMU finished last season with a 33-23 overall record.

Preseason Player of the Year
Makayla Kovac was named the RMAC Preseason Softball Player of the Year. She was the RMAC Player of the Year the last two years after starting all 56 games at shortstop and leading the team in slugging percentage (.747), home runs (13), RBIs (60), runs (57), walks (34) and assists (92). She was ranked second in the conference last year in home runs and third in RBIs. She was added to the NFCA Player of the Year Watch list.

Coaches Preseason Poll
CMU was picked third in the RMAC Coaches Preseason Poll after receiving three first place votes and 120 total points. Regis was picked first after receiving five first place votes and 133 points. MSU Denver received five first place votes and 130 points.

Hits
Colorado Mesa was 24-0 when they out-hit opponents last season.

Home Runs
CMU was 19-4 last season when they hit a home run.

Scoring Runs
Colorado Mesa was 33-9 when they scored 3+ runs and 0-14 when they scored two or fewer last season.

Starting Lineup Returning
After losing four seniors, Kovac, Hodgson, Pakes, Phillis and Robinson will be returning to the starting lineup this season.

Coaching
Head Coach Ben Garcia is entering his second season coaching at CMU. He finished last season with a 33-23 record overall and 28-11 in the conference.

Looking Ahead
Colorado Mesa will be on the road to play a four-game series against Fort Lewis Feb. 20-21.
