AZTEC, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team completed the series sweep of Fort Lewis by scoring a combined 35 runs in the doubleheader Sunday (Feb. 21).
The Mavs won game one 14-5 and game two 21-11.
Zoe Pakes led Mesa in game one batting 4-for-4 including a solo homer to left field in the fifth.
Mesa scored in every inning including five in the third and six in the fourth. The Mavs recorded 13 hits in the game and seven of its 14 runs were unearned on four Skyhawk errors.
McKenzie Surface earned the win for the Mavericks giving up five runs, all earned, on six hits and struck out seven.
Colorado Mesa's high scoring offense was helped in game two by eight errors by Fort Lewis.
Mesa scored three runs in the top of the first, but Fort Lewis took the lead after scoring four in the bottom of the inning.
CMU responded with four in the second and a game-high eight in the third that included a three-run homer to left center by
Brooke Hodgson.
FLC scored two in the third and four in the fifth to cut the CMU lead to 15-10 heading into the fifth.
Blake Adams hit a two-run homer and
Makayla Kovac blasted a three-run homer as part of a six run fifth inning for CMU.
Brooke Hodgson led the Mavs batting 4-for-5 with five RBIs and four runs scored. She also earned the win allowing six runs, five earned.
Colorado Mesa (5-4, 4-0) will host Dixie State in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday (Feb. 23).Â
