GUNNISON, Colo. - No. 11 Colorado Mesa won seven of the ten bouts in a 23-13 win over No. 16 Western State Colorado in a battle deemed 'How The West Was Won' at Paul Wright Gym. The win was the Mavericks second in a row against their arch rival.
The Mavericks dropped the first two bouts at 125 and 133 pounds, surrendering a major decision and a decsion to go behind 7-0.
Colorado Mesa then went on a run of four straight wins, highlighted by a technical fall at 157 pounds by
Jason Buhr. Buhr scored a nearfall late in the third period to secure the 19-3 win over Mountaineer Ian Steen.
Western State would pick up a pin at 174 when Austin Harris pinned
Randy Boerner. But that was all they would get in the dual as the Mavericks claimed wins at 184, 197 and 285 pounds.
In a matchup of NCAA qualifiers, second-ranked
Daniel Salazar earned a 3-1 decision over seventh-ranked and returning national runner-up Corbin Bennetts at 141 pounds. Salazar earned the only takedown of the match as the two traded escapes. Salazar is now 2-0 against Bennetts on the season.
Marcus Haughian earned the match clinching win at 197 pounds when he defeated Mick Doughrity 5-3. Haughian earned an early takedown and rode Doughrity for a majority of the match.
Colter Bentley ended the night with an 8-6 overtime victory over Western's Lewis Arendall. Arendall scored a takedown as time expired but Bentley secured the takedown in a scramble with a little over 15 seconds left in overtime.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Colorado Mines at 7pm in Brownson Arena.
