Box Score 2 DENVER – The No. 18 Colorado Mesa University volleyball team opened play at the Colorado Premier Challenge with a pair of losses Friday (Sept. 11).
CMU began the day with a five set loss to No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State and followed up with a 3-1 loss to Regis.
CMU hit a team-high .393 to win the first set against SWMSU 25-20. The Mustangs hit just .167 in the second set, but held the Mavericks to .083 offensively to win the second set 25-23. CMU held SWMSU to a team-low .156 attack percentage to win the third 25-18. The Mustangs won sets four (25-21) and five (15-9) and the match.
Caitie Breaux led four Mavericks with 10+ kills with 13 kills.
Erin Perez tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs.
"The match against Southwest proved that we can hang with the best in the country, but we have to learn to be a lot more consistent in everything we do," said head coach
Dave Fleming. "We can't change based on the score or what happened on the last play."
Regis opened the second match with a 25-20 win in the first set. CMU rebounded with a 25-18 win in the second. The Mavericks would hit a team-high .231 in the third, but the
Rangers won the set in extra points (29-27). RU won the fourth set (25-18) and the match after hitting a match-high .423.
"Regis just played better as a team and deserved the win," said Fleming. "It will be a process with this group. We are talented, but we have to buy in and back it up with hard work. If we do, the sky is the limit."
Kricket Adleman finished with a team-high 17 digs, and
Ali Svorinic led the team with 24 assists.
Erin Perez tallied her second double-double of the day with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Audrey Steinkirchner hit a match-high .429 with a team-high 14 kills.
CMU (2-4) will close the weekend with a pair of matches Saturday (Sept. 12).Â
