Box Score 2 SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team moved to 16-5 in league play with a pair of wins at Western New Mexico Saturday (March 28).
The Mavericks won game one 10-8 in eight innings and followed up with a 10-3 win in game two.
The Mustangs got out to an early 3-0 lead in the first game. The Mavs responded with two runs in the fourth, but the Mustangs hung five in the bottom of the inning.
Makayla Kovac hit a two-run home run, her sixth of the season, as part of a three-run fifth inning.
The Mavericks would send the game to extra innings thanks to a three-run homerun by
Zoe Pakes in the top of the seventh.
CMU would manufacture what would hold up as the winning two runs in the top of the eighth for the win.
Megan Brown reached on a bunt single and would score on a double by
Makayla Kovac.
Brooke Hodgson singled through the left side to score Kovac.
CMU scored 10 runs on 10 hits and left six on base. WNMU scored eight runs on 14 hits and left 11 runners on base.
Makayla Kovac and
Brooke Hodgson each batted 3-for-5 in the win.
Mesa scored in five of seven innings to win game two 10-3. CMU collected 15 hits in the game, all singles.
Makayla Kovac and
Madelyn Schulz each had a team-high three hits in the game.
Rochelle Talamantes earned the win scattering 11 hits and allowing three runs, one earned.
CMU (20-15, 16-5) and WNMU will play a doubleheader Sunday (March 29) to close out the four game series.Â
