No. 13 Mavs Pin Down Upset of No. 5 Western

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Jordan Passehl's takedown in overtime sealed the match and the dual as No. 13 Colorado Mesa defeated No. 5 Western State Colorado 23-17 in front of 1,983 fans in the Battle in Brownson. The Mavericks are in sole possession of first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual standings after the win.

Passehl, ranked No. 8 this week in the NWCA National Rankings, was tied with Western State's Peter Anguiano 1-1 before heading into the overtime segment. Passehl scored a takedown roughly 35 seconds into the period to secure the win. Maverick students rushed the mat after the takedown to help celebrate the win.

Colby Christensen got the night started with 7-5 win at 125 pounds over Trent Piatt. After surrendering the opening takedown, Christensen picked up three escapes, a takedown and a two-point nearfall.

After a Mountaineer win at 133 pounds, the Mavericks rattled off four straight wins.

Daniel Salazar earned a two-point overtime win over Corbin Bennetts at 141 pounds. James Martinez and Jessie Hoffschneider each earned major decision victories at 157 and 165 pounds.

Drew Schumann may have had the win of the night at 149 pounds. Schumann trailed in the match 4-1 in the second period before earning a reversal that put Mountaineer Ian Steen on his back. He eventually earned the pin at the 4:17 mark of the night that gave the Mavericks a 20-3 lead in the dual.

Western State came storming back with their three ranked wrestlers at 174, 184 and 197 pounds. Each of them earned a bonus point win and cut the lead to just three with one match remaining.

Colorado Mesa can clinch at least a share of the RMAC Dual Meet Championship with a win next Friday over New Mexico Highlands. They can clinch the outright Championship with a win over Colorado Mines the following night.

Both duals will start at 7:00pm in Brownson Arena.
