GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 6 Colorado Mesa wrestling team secured their first-ever RMAC Championship by picking up a 35-7 win over the Colorado Mines Orediggers on Saturday evening in Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks won eight of the ten bouts on the night that included two by pin and two by major decision.
Jordan Passehl, wrestling in the second match of the night, picked up a pin at the 1:55 mark of the first period over Oredigger Nickolas DeBryun. Passehl earned an early takedown before turning his opponent to his back for the fall.
Colby Christensen followed Passehl with a pin of his own at the 3:19 mark. Christensen earned two takedowns and two three point nearfalls on Zach Gracia before pinning him early in the second period.
Jonathon Stelling and
Bruno Nicoletti each earned wins by major decision on the evening.
Colorado Mesa won their first-ever wrestling championship in the school's history with the win. They finished the season with a perfect 8-0 RMAC record and a 14-1 record overall.
The Mavericks will have the next two weeks off before the NCAA Regional Tournament that begins on February 28 in Pueblo, Colo. The top four finishers at each weight will qualify for the NCAA National Championships.
