Defense Key in Mavericks Victory

Box Score LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Colorado Mesa limited the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls to just two field goals in the second half in a 50-40 win in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Friday evening in the John A. Wilson Complex.
 
The Mavericks limited New Mexico Highlands to just 13 points in the second half and to a shooting percentage of 9.5 percent (2-for-21). The Cowgirls recorded nine points from the free-throw line in the half.
 
Colorado Mesa's numbers were not that much better. They scored 17 points in the half and shot 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from the field. They too made nine free-throws.
 
Leanndra Gilbert led the Mavericks tonight with a game-high 18 points. She helped lead the inside attack that recorded 22 points in the paint to just eight for New Mexico Highlands.
 
Rebounding has been one of the Mavericks keys all season and once again they owned that stat. They grabbed 46 rebounds including 14 on the offensive glass that led to six second chance points.
 
The Mavericks started off the game in another hole and worked themselves out of it. New Mexico Highlands raced out to a 15-4 lead but Colorado Mesa closed out the half on a 29-12 run to take a 33-27 lead.
 
Colorado Mesa will take on the Western New Mexico Mustangs tomorrow night in Silver City. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
