GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University football team racked up 624 yards of total offense and scored 48 unanswered points in a 48-7 win at home over Black Hills State Saturday (Oct. 3).
Quarterback
Sean Rubalcaba led the CMU offense completing 18-of-28 passes for 343 yards and three touchdowns.
Running back
DJ Hubbard rushed for 125 of the Mavericks' 229 yards on the ground averaging 7.4 yards per carry.
After two missed field goals by CMU, BHSU scored first with a 13 play, 80 yard drive that ended with an eight-yard rush by Phydell Paris. The score was just the second offensive touchdown that the CMU defense has allowed this season.
Mesa would score on all four of its drives in the second quarter.
DJ Hubbard put the Mavs on the board with a 23-yard touchdown that completed a six-play, 80-yard drive.
The next two CMU touchdowns came through the air.

Derek Vander Velde with a three-yard pass at 7:41 and a 57-yard strike to
Josh Brown at 4:25.
Ryan Sheehan added a 48-yard field goal with 30 seconds remaining in the first half for CMU.
Colorado Mesa's next scoring drive took advantage of a short field after recovering a fumble on the BHSU 30-yard line.
Rubalcaba found
Virnel Moon for a six-yard touchdown pass to cap the three-play scoring drive at 8:23 of the third.
Sheehan added his second field goal of the day, this one from 32-yards, to extend the CMU lead to 34-7.
Jonathon Beverly and
David Tann each found the endzone in the fourth quarter to complete the scoring for CMU.
Vernal Moon led the Mavericks with 86 receiving yards, and
Josh Brown added 71.
Dustin Rivas tallied 40 yards on three punt returns.
Tom Saager recorded a game-high 12 tackles for CMU.
Carlos Aviles recorded the lone Maverick sack and made eight tackles, including three for a loss of 16 yards.
The CMU defense held BHSU to 355 yards of total offense, including just 101 yards rushing, and recovered one fumble and intercepted one pass.
Colorado Mesa (4-1, 3-0), who has not lost a conference game, will play at Western New Mexico (2-3, 1-2) Oct. 10.
