GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa University football team delivered a win on Homecoming defeating Western New Mexico 52-26 Saturday (Oct. 17). The win was the fifth straight for the Mavericks (6-1, 5-0) who remain undefeated in RMAC play.
The CMU offense wasted no time putting points on the board scoring on its first three drives of the game.
The Mavericks opening drive covered 75 yards on four plays and ended with a 16-yard rush by
DJ Hubbard.
The CMU offense got the ball back thanks to a three and out by the defense. The Mavs second drive also covered 75 yards on nine plays.
Sean Rubalcaba completed a seven-yard touchdown pass to
Marcus Hines.
Rubalcaba and Hines connected on the following drive for a 23-yard touchdown. The play capped an 11 play drive that covered 99 yards.
The Mav's special team play of the game came after
Colby Dixon leaped over the Mustang's line and blocked a 25-yard field goal attempt. The block was the second this season for Dixon who also had one against Adam State.
WNMU would kick a 28-yard field goal on its next offensive possession early in the second quarter.
The field goal started a string of 13 unanswered points by the Mustangs that included a 49-yard touchdown pass and a 29-yard field goal.
After a CMU drive that lost two yards on three plays,
Salim Cleghorne intercepted a pass on WNMU's next offensive play and returned it 63-yards for a touchdown.
Mitch Glassman threw his second touchdown pass of the day, 31-yards to Xavier Ayers with seven seconds remaining in the half.
CMU entered halftime with a 28-20 lead.
The Mavericks scored 10 points in a 70-second span thanks to a 41-yard field goal by
Ryan Sheehan and a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown by
Dustin Rivas three plays later.
Sean Rubalcaba extended the CMU lead to 45-20 with his third touchdown pass of the day, a 15-yard strike to
Ceejhay French-Love with 2:26 left in the third.
Western New Mexico's next two drives ended with interceptions by
Blake Brockett and
Salim Cleghorne.
David Tann rumbled 38-yards for the final CMU score of the game with 1:58 remaining.
The Mustangs scored a touchdown with two seconds remaining but the Maverick defense batted down the pass on the two-point conversion to win 52-26.
21 of CMU's 52 points came off turnovers. The Mavericks are +15 in turnover margin this season.
The Mustangs led in total offense 631 to 530 thanks to 532 passing yards. The 532 passing yards was a career-high for Mitch Glassman who broke the RMAC record for passing yards in a career. Larry Young II was Glassman's preferred target catching 11 passes for a game-high 193 yards.
CMU quarterback
Sean Rubalcaba completed 13-of-28 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for 91 yards.
Mesa had two players rush for over 100 yards in the game.
DJ Hubbard finished with a game-high 142 yards (9.5 ypc), and
David Tann added 101.
Tom Saager led the Maverick defense with 14 tackles, including five solo.
