Makayla Kovac was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Tuesday (Jan. 27).
The Erie, Colo., native was a NFCA Second Team All-American and the RMAC Player of the Year in 2014. She batted .497 with 20 doubles, four triples and 18 home runs. Kovac led the RMAC in five different categories; batting average (.497), slugging percentage (1.000), runs per game (1.27), RBI's (68) and RBI's per game (1.42).
Sarah Phillis was named to the RMAC Preseason All-Conference Team. The Placerville, Calif., native hit .420 with 63 hits, second most on the team, and a .667 slugging percentage.
Colorado Mesa, the defending RMAC Regular Season Champion, was picked tied for third in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. CMU received 108 points and tied with Adams State for third. Defending RMAC Tournament Champion MSU Denver received 10 first-place votes and 141 points. CSU-Pueblo was picked second with 124 points and three first-place votes.
Colorado Mesa will open the 2015 season at the NFCA Div. II Leadoff Classic Feb. 6-8 in Tucson, Ariz.
