PUEBLO, Colo. – No. 19 Colorado Mesa dropped two of the first three bouts but rebounded by winning the final seven bouts of the night in a 34-9 win over the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference wrestling dual in Massari Arena.
The dual began at 165 pounds and Maverick Jesie Hoffschneider picked up an 11-1 major decision over Phil Young. Hoffschneider picked up a pair of takedowns and picked up a pair of near falls in the victory.
The ThunderWolves earned a pair of wins at 174 and 184 pounds to give CSU-Pueblo a 9-4 advantage in the match. The 184 pound bout would be the last CSU-Pueblo would win on the night.
Paco Retana stopped the mini run by CSU-Pueblo by earning a technical fall at 197 pounds. Retana earned his 15-0 win in the first round over ThunderWolf Anthony Ball.
In the heavyweight bout,
Jordan Passehl scored a last second takedown on Niko Bogojevic to earn a 3-1 decision. The win gave the Mavericks a 12-9 advantage at the midway point of the dual.
After a decision by
Colby Christensen at 125 pounds,
Jonathon Stelling won by major decision,
Daniel Salazar picked up a pin and
Nick Swanson won by technical fall to stretch the Maverick lead to 30-9.
Third ranked
James Martinez earned an 11-1 major decision over Steven Kelly to close out the dual.
Colorado Mesa will be off until the Battle in Brownson on Feb. 5 against Western State Colorado. The dual could have major implications in the RMAC Dual Championship.
