James Martinez eclipsed 100 wins in his career on Saturday in his first match in the Midwest Duals. Martinez defeated Sean Havlovic of Northern State by pin in 6:32 for win No. 100. His current overall record sits at 103-34 with 43 pins.
STARTING THINGS OFF RIGHTSenior 125 pounder
Colby Christensen is currently riding a seven-match win streak heading into this week's RMAC duals. He was one the lone Maverick to win all five matches last weekend at the Chadron State dual and Midwest Duals. He will face No. 2 ranked Gerald Huff of Adams State on Wednesday in a showdown of the top two wrestlers at 125 pounds in the RMAC.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHINGColorado Mesa had a pair of firsts happen last Saturday at the Midwest Duals. The Mavericks defeated Northern State in their opening dual 50-3 which was the first time they had scored 50 points in a dual since the program restarted in 2007. It was also the first time they had deafeated a top five NWCA team in a dual when they took down former RMAC foe and No. 3 ranked Nebraska-Kearney 23-10.
BATTLE IN BROWNSON SETThe 'Battle in Brownson' is set for February 5 when the Mavericks take on Western State Colorado at 7:00pm in Brownson Arena. A trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament will be raffled off at the event with the winner receiving two tickets to the event, $100 gas card, two-nights lodging and two dinners in Pueblo. To be eligible for the trip, attendees must buy a $5 admission ticket at the gate.
