KEARNEY, Neb. – Colorado Mesa went a perfect 4-0 at the Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraska-Kearney. The Mavericks scored a huge win over nationally ranked host No. 3 Nebraska Kearney and improved to 8-0 in duals this season. Short recaps of each dual below:
#19 Colorado Mesa 50, Northern State 3
The Mavericks won nine of the ten bouts in a 50-3 win over Northern Sun Conference foe Northern State. All of the wins for the Mavericks came for bonus points including
Drew Schumann,
James Martinez,
Mitch Wyatt and
Jordan Passehl all picking up wins by fall. Colorado Mesa also picked up three wins by forfeit.
#19 Colorado Mesa 23, #3 Nebraska-Kearney 10
Colorado Mesa pulled off the upset of No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney 23-10, by winning seven of the ten bouts. The Mavericks and Lopers traded the first four bouts of the dual. Colorado Mesa then rattled off four straight wins, including major decisions by
James Martinez and
Randy Boerner, to ice the dual.
Jordan Passehl earned a decision win over Ivan DeLeon at 285 pounds.
#19 Colorado Mesa 24, Northeastern Oklahoma A&M 19
The Mavericks needed a pair of wins in the final two bouts to win the dual and got them from seniors
Paco Retana and
Jordan Passehl in the 24-19 win over Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Retana scored a 12-4 major decision at 197 pounds and
Jordan Passehl pinned John Davison in the 285 pound bout.
#19 Colorado Mesa 31, Southwest Minnesota State 9
Colorado Mesa capped the Midwest Duals with a 31-9 win over Southwest Minnesota State, winning eight of the ten matches.
James Martinez and
Paco Retana each scored pins in the dual while
Daniel Salazar earned a major decision victory at 141 pounds.
The Mavericks will be back on the road next week with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference duals against Adams State and CSU-Pueblo.
