CHADRON, Neb. – The No. 19 Colorado Mesa wrestling team remained unbeaten in duals after a 24-12 victory over the Chadron State Eagles on Thursday evening in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual.
Colby Christensen got the night started with a major decision win over Eagle Robert Ozuna 11-1. Christensen picked up a takedown and immediately put Ozuna on his back with a tilt, giving him a three-point near fall and a lead he wouldn't surrender.
After dropping the 133 pound bout,
Daniel Salazar picked up a decision at 141 pounds to give the Mavericks a 7-3 lead in the dual.
Drew Schumann had the win of the night, pinning Jacob Anderson of Chadron State at the 3:30 mark of the bout. Anderson entered the bout with a 15-4 record and a 7-0 dual record before Schumann's pin. It gave the Mavericks a 13-3 lead in the dual.
At 157 pounds,
Nick Swanson picked up a major decision victory over Reed Burgener to extend the Maverick lead to 17-3. Swanson subbed in for No. 3
James Martinez, who is sitting on 99 wins in his career, and earned his ninth win of the season.
Paco Retana ended a string of three straight Eagle victories with a major decision over Devan Fors, 10-2. Retana, wrestling in only his sixth match of the season, picked up a pair of three-point nearfalls in the match to clinch the dual for the Mavericks.
Jordan Passehl ended the night with a decision win over Jake Weber, 9-4. Passehl was in a 4-0 hole after being taken down and turned right at the end of the opening period. He rebounded with nine straight points to end the match.
The Mavericks will compete in the Midwest Duals at Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday. The Mavericks will face Northern State, Dakota Wesleyan, Southwest Minnesota and No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney.
