Box Score DURANGO, Colorado – The Colorado Mesa women's soccer team opened their season on Thursday afternoon with a 2-2 tie against the Midwestern State Mustangs in the Fort Lewis Women's Soccer Classic at Dirks Field.
Midwestern State struck first in the 13
th minute of the match on a goal by Nicole Coetzer. Coetzer took a long pass and ended up on a one on one and scored to give the Mustangs a 1-0 advantage.
The Mavericks answered back in the 32
nd minute on a
Sarah Pope goal. Pope received a cross from
Marie Dreher and found the lower left corner to knot the match at 1-1.
Mustang Alyssa Parkhill put Midwestern State up just over three minutes later. Parkhill took a rebound off a shot from Stephanie Bonilla and found the back of the net for a 2-1 advantage.
Colorado Mesa answered back with a goal in the 80
th minute to knot the match at 2-2.
Darion Wiegert scored on a shot from 20 yards out and found the top center of the goal.
"We started out a little nervous and it took us awhile to get going," head coach
Jason Clare said. "In the second half we settled down and really took control of the match. We had good scoring chances."
The Mavericks outshot Midwestern State in the match 21-12 and took more corner kicks 6-5.
Colorado Mesa will finish up the weekend on Saturday with a match against Texas Woman's at 10:00am.
