GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- After 102 minutes of back-forth play, a game-winning goal from Jenelle Arenibas sends the Mavs to the RMAC Semifinals over the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.
This win sets up a rematch with the Regis Rangers, the number one seed and hosts for the remainder of the tournament.
This result was also Keely Wieczorek's 45th career shutout, breaking the RMAC record for most career shutouts.
The first half saw little offense as both defenses stuffed out any kind of offense that came their way.
The first shot of the game came from Mari Ige in the 8th minute but was blocked. Kylie Hoffman had two looks, but both were too powerful. The last shot of the half came from Fort Lewis in the 19th minute, but it missed right of the goal.
The second half saw more of the same, but Ige got a good look at goal in the 55th minute, however it was saved by the Skyhawks' goalkeeper Trinity Lujan.
The Skyhawks' Kiana Jamerson responded with a shot of her own, but it was wide left.
The 72nd minute saw Kailin Gudewicz get a great look, but it was saved by Wieczorek. Olivia Bariao-Arce made Lujan work with a shot of her own, but Lujan was able to corral it.
The last ten minutes saw three more shots from either side, but every chance was dealt with by the defense. Since no team could find the lead, the game went into overtime.
The Skyhawks got the first look of overtime from Tristen Fought, but her shot went far right. Parker Mairs got a shot of her own, but it hit the crossbar. Jenna Salazar got the last shot off, but it was too powerful as the game required a second half of overtime.
However, it did not take for the Mavs to send the fans at Community Hospital Unity Field home happy.
Katie Lozano-Monjaraz made a great tackle and got the Mavs on a counterattack. Her and Arenibas travelled the distance of the field.
After some give-and-go passing, Lozano-Monjaraz found a wide open Arenibas who scored the winner to send the Mavs to the semifinals.
Both teams had a combined 16 shots with CMU having nine compared to the Skyhawks' seven.
Arenibas scored her fourth goal of the season while Lozano-Monjaraz got her first assist of the season. Wieczorek only had one save in her record-setting shutout.
The Mavs will face the Rangers on Nov. 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Regis Turf Fields.
