Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Cody Paul tallied 178 yards of total offense to lead Chadron State to a 24-13 win at Colorado Mesa Saturday (Sept. 27). Paul ran for a game-high 133 yards and added 45 yards on kick returns.
The Eagles would score on their first offensive drive of the game marching 65 yards on 10 plays. John McLain completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Vinich for a 7-0 lead.
The Mavericks tied it with a four-yard touchdown pass to
Daryl Hawkins to cap a 10 play, 84-yard drive with 3:27 remaining in the opening quarter.
Chadron scored its second touchdown of the quarter when Michael Madkins scampered nine-yards to the endzone with 1:15 remaining.
CSC would tack on a 36-yard field goal late in the first half to enter halftime with a 17-7 lead.
The Mavericks capitalize on a blocked Chadron punt by
Isaac Koch by scoring on a four-play, 35-yard drive that lasted less than one minute.
Ricky Trinidad, who missed the last two games due to injury, scored on a 15-yard touchdown run at 10:40 of the third quarter. Trinidad averaged 5.8 yards per carry on nine carries for a team-high 52 yards. Holder
Austin Pitchford was forced to scramble on the extra point attempt due to a bad snap.
The Mavericks would get the ball back quickly thanks to an interception by
Dustin Rivas, his fourth of the season, on the Chadron 25-yard line.
Aric Kaiser would throw a touchdown pass to
Daniel Rankin that was negated due to pass interference. The drive would result in a punt after a loss of 22-yards with the penalty and a sack by Chadron State.
After a 37 minute weather delay, Cody Paul completed the scoring for Chadron with a six-yard touchdown run with 8:26 left in the fourth.
Kaiser finished the day 12-for-30 for 135 yards and one interception.
Steven Lindquist finished with game-highs in both receptions (five) and receiving yards (48) for CMU.
Chadron finished with a 373-281 edge in total offense, including a 235-136 advantage in rushing yards. Mesa held a slim 145-138 edge in yards through the air. The Eagles also won the time of possession battle 35:33 to 24:27.
Penalties also plagued the Mavericks who were whistled for nine penalties for 84 yards. The Eagles committed seven penalties for 51 yards.
CMU (2-2, 1-1) will play at Black Hills State Oct. 4.
