Box Score GOLDEN, Colo. – The No. 20 Colorado Mesa University volleyball team rebounded from last night's five set heartbreaker at MSU Denver with a convincing three set win at No. 12 Colorado School of Mines Friday (Sept. 26). The win was the fourth this season for the Mavericks against a top-25 team.
The team wasted no time in the first set. CMU hit a match-high .514 with 20 kills and only two errors to win the set 25-19. Mines on the other hand hit .294.
The offense cooled off a little in the second, but still hit a very respectable .350 with 19 kills. The defense stepped up in the second holding CSM to a match-low .162 to win the second 25-17.
The Orediggers would out hit the Mavericks .314 to .297 in the third, but the Mavs would take the set and the match 25-22.
"Tonight was a great bounce back win," said head coach
Dave Fleming. "We were in attack mode from 0-0. They were a lot of fun to watch."
Erin Perez, who finished with a team-high 10 digs and hit .316 with eight kills, echoed Fleming's statement. "Good overall team win. When we are who we are, we are very tough to beat."
CMU finished with advantages in numerous categories including kills (55-40), hitting percentage (.384 to .255), assists (52-39) and digs (44-37).
Casey Ball tallied a match-high 16 kills and hit .387 with eight digs for CMU. Teammate
Audrey Steinkirchner was nearly unstoppable hitting .600 with 13 kills.
Melissa Hess also enjoyed a strong night offensively hitting .381 with 11 kills.
Jordyn Moody added 45 assists.
Megan Peterson was the lone Oredigger to finish in double digits in kills with 10.
CMU (10-3, 4-1) will close the weekend with a match at Colorado Christian Saturday (Sept. 26).
