Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa was eliminated from the RMAC Softball Tournament Thursday (May 1), but it wasn't without a fight. CMU, the No. 1 seed, opened the tournament with a 14-9 loss to No. 8 seed Fort Lewis 14-9, and closed the day with a 10-8 loss to No. 5 Adams State.
CMU was facing elimination in the fifth inning trailing 9-2 to Adams. Lindsey Drayer scored on a sac fly foul ball by
Jessica Severinsen to keep the Mavericks hopes alive.
The Mavericks would find its self in the same spot the following inning after the Grizzlies hung one run in the top of the seventh.
Mesa clawed back into the contest with six runs in the sixth on six hits, five of which were singles.
The CMU rally came up short after the Mavericks scrounged up just one hit in its last at-bats.
Madelyn Schulz reached base in all four at-bats collecting three walks and one hit for CMU.
Megan Brown and
Makayla Kovac, the RMAC Player of the Year, each finished with a game-high two hits.
Carly DeLorenzo led ASU batting 5-for-5 with six stolen bases.
Jessica Severinsen took the loss for CMU giving up nine runs, eight earned, on 12 hits.
Errors plagued the Mavericks in its first game of the tournament committing six in the 14-9 loss to Fort Lewis. Seven of the Skyhawks 14 runs were unearned.
Makayla Kovac tied the game at 2-2 with a home run, her team-leading 18
th of the season, in the bottom of the second. She finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs.
FLC extended its lead to 7-2 with four runs in the top half of the fifth, but CMU remained within striking distance with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Jessica Severinsen's home run highlighted a four run sixth inning that gave the Mavericks their first lead of the game 9-8.
The Skyhawks would have six runs cross home plate in the seventh inning thanks to four hits and two errors. FLC finished the game with 14 runs on 12 hits.
Colorado Mesa finishes the season 27-21.
