GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's tennis team advanced to the championship of the RMAC tennis tournament after a thrilling 5-4 win over Metro State Friday (April 18).
Jordan Lyden and
Spencer Weinberg took the win at No. 1 doubles (8-3), but CMU dropped the other two doubles matches to trail 2-1 after doubles.
Lyden fell in three sets (2-6, 6-1, 6-1) at No. 1 singles, but Weinberg won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Nick Baker defeated
Andres Garcia-Rojas 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3.
Facing a must win situation,
Blake Demond and
Cody Freischlag each won at No. 4 and 5.
The match would come down to No. 6 singles.
Trevor Brown won the first set for CMU 6-2, but Trevor Jones took the second 2-6. In front of a large hometown crowd Brown clinched the win for the Mavericks with a 6-3 win.
Mesa improves to 12-7 on the year and will face the No. 1 seed Western New Mexico for the tournament title Saturday (April 18) at noon.
