Box Score 2 ALAMOSA, Colo. - Colorado Mesa's softball winning streak was stopped at 10 games after Adams State won the first game of a doubleheader Saturday (March 22). ASU won the first game 7-3, but CMU rebounded with a 10-6 win to earn on a split on the day.
Adams opened the day with a single run in the first inning and two more in the third to jump to an early 3-0 lead in game one.
Makayla Kovac got the Mavericks on the board with a solo run in the top of the fourth inning. CMU would tack on one more run in the fourth and another in the fifth.
The Grizzlies added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings for the win.
Hits were nearly identical with Adams leading 10-9 but the Grizzlies scored seven runs to the Mavericks three. CMU also committed three errors in the contest.
Mesa wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in game two with three runs in the first innings thanks to triples by
Makayla Kovac and
Nicole Robinson.
After scoring a single run in the bottom of the first, Adams tied the game with a two-run homerun in the fourth.
Sarah Phillis responded with a two-run blast of her own in the top of the fifth. CMU manufactured three more runs the following inning on five hits, all singles.
Mesa scored two runs in the seventh, and Adams could only muster three runs during its last at-bat.
Ashley Pulido struck out five and gave up six runs on eight hits in the Maverick win.
Sarah Phillis went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three runs for Mesa.
Makayla Kovac got on base during all four at-bats, two hits and two walks, drove in two runs and scored twice.
Mesa (13-9, 12-4) will wrap-up the four-game series at Adams Sunday (March 22).
