Softball Sweeps UCCS

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa softball team swept UC-Colorado Springs in a doubleheader Friday (Feb. 28).
The Mavericks won game one 6-4, and completed the sweep with an 11-6 win in game two.

Sarah Phillis doubled with the bases loaded in the first inning to give CMU a 2-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning due to an error by the Mavericks.

CMU added one run in the third and another in the fifth thanks to a home run by Makayla Kovac.

Karissa Nickeson blasted a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to give the Mavericks the win.

Jessica Severinsen threw all eight innings for the Mavericks giving up four runs with only one earned on six hits. She struck out five and walked two.

The Mavericks bats really heated up in the second game accumulating 14 hits, including two home runs.

Makayla Kovac hit a grandslam as part of a six run second inning for the Mavericks. She finished with five RBIs.

Madelyn Schulz hit her first home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning.

Mesa tallied three more runs on six hits to conclude the scoring in the top of the seventh.

Jo Bolyard allowed five runs on nine hits in six innings for her second win of the season.

Mesa (4-8, 3-3) will go for the season sweep of UC-Colorado Springs Saturday (March 1).
