Metro Sweeps Softball Doubleheader Over Mesa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Metro State swept both games of the softball doubleheader against Colorado Mesa Sunday (Feb. 23). The Roadrunners won three of the four games in the series including today's doubleheader by scores of 5-1 and 14-6.

Metro State opened up game one with a run in each of the first two innings.

The Mavericks put one run up in the third after Lindsay Drayer hit a triple to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Megan Brown at the next at bat for the lone CMU run of the game.

Metro added three more runs in the top of the seventh with the help of two errors by CMU.

Sarah Phillis finished 2-for-3 at the plate for Mesa, and Jessica Severinsen took her fourth loss of the season on the mound allowing two runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.

Metro manufactured three runs on six hits in the first inning of game two.

Makayla Kovac blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall to pull within one, 3-2, at the end of the first.

Metro's offensive production continued in the second with three runs, but Mesa answered with another homerun in the third. Jessica Severinsen hit a three-run shot to left center to pull the Mav's back within one, 6-5.

Mesa committed two errors in the fourth that led to three more Metro runs.

Brooke Ortale led off the fourth inning with a home run to left center, but it would be the final Maverick score of the day.

CMU committed three of its six errors of the game in the fifth inning that saw five more MSU runs cross the plate.

Mesa used three pitchers over the five inning game with Ashley Pulido taking the loss giving up three runs on six hits.

Mesa (2-8, 1-3) will play a four-game RMAC series at UCCS March 1-2.
