Box Score 2 CANYON, Texas – The Colorado Mesa softball team defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 4-0 for its first win of the season and fell to Tarleton State 7-6 in extra innings to conclude the West Texas A&M Tournament Sunday (Feb. 16).
Against Kingsville, the Mavericks scored one run in the second and added two more in the third thanks to a triple to right center by
Jessica Severinsen. Severinsen finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
CMU added one more run in the fifth.
Jo Bolyard threw all seven innings for CMU giving up just three hits, walking three and striking out five.
Mesa jumped out to an early four run lead in the top half of the first inning against Tarleton. The Mavericks tallied five hits in the inning that was highlighted by a triple by
Sarah Phillis that drove in two runs.
Phillis would triple again in the fifth inning and go on to score the team's only run of the inning.
Tarleton scored two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Mesa manufactured one run in the eighth, but Tarleton answered with two runs to take the win.
Sarah Phillis hit 2-for-4 with two RBI's, and
Makayla Kovac went 3-for-5 with one RBI.

Mesa will host Metro State this weekend (Feb. 22-23) to open RMAC play.
