Colorado Mesa will open the 2014 season at the West Texas Invitational in Canyon, Texas Feb. 14-16. The Mavericks will play six games all against Lone Star Teams during the three day tournament.
Coach Abrams
Head coach Candace Abrams enters her second season at Colorado Mesa. Abrams led the Mavericks to a 28-17-1 mark in 2013. She previously served as an assistant coach at Arizona and Barry.
Polls
Colorado Mesa received votes in the NFCA Preseason Coaches Poll. The Mavericks will face two top-25 teams this weekend in No. 8 West Texas and No. 17 Angelo State.
Preseason Favorites
The Mavericks were picked as the preseason favorite in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. CMU received 9 of 13 first place votes.
Pitcher of the Year
Senior
Jessica Severinsen was named the RMAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year. The Elizabeth, Colo., native earned NFCA and Daktronics All-Region second team honors in 2013. She finished with a 19-6 record with 123 strikeouts and a 2.31 era last season.
Preseason Team
Nicole Robinson and
Makayla Kovac were also named to the RMAC Preseason All-Conference Team. Robinson (Yuba City, Calif.) hit .346 with 35 runs, second most on the team, as a freshman last season. Kovac (Erie, Colo.) earned first team All-RMAC accolades after finishing second on the team in batting average (.380) and tied for the team lead in hits with 57.
Plenty of Offense
Colorado Mesa ranked in the top-50 nationally in four different offensive categories. The Mavericks ranked 20th in doubles per game (1.7), 33rd in home runs per game (0.91), 41st in triples per game (0.26) and 45th in slugging percentage (0.463).
Looking Ahead
Colorado Mesa will host Metro State for a four-game series Feb. 22-23 in the RMAC opener for both institutions.
