Football Hosts #8 CSUP

Complete Notes in PDF

Colorado Mesa will face a ranked opponent for the second straight week when it hosts No. 8 CSU-Pueblo Saturday (Nov. 8). The Mavericks enter the contest on a two-game losing streak and 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the league. The Thunderwolves are 8-1 overall and 6-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to Fort Lewis.

Series
CSU-P leads the all-time series with CMU 4-2. The Mavericks won the first two meetings, but the Thunderwolves have won the last four.

Rushing High
Daryl Hawkins ran for a season-high 142 yards at Colorado Mines last week. The 142 yards rushing was the most by a CMU player since Jake Cimolino ran for 146 at Chadron State on Sept. 21, 2013. Hawkins averaged 15.8 yards per carry, due in large part to a 70-yard run, the longest by a CMU player this season, and another for 62 yards.

Ground Attack
Colorado Mesa finished with a 221-174 edge in rushing yards at Colorado Mines last week. Last week marked the first time this season that CMU out-rushed its opponent and lost.

Throw it Around
Andrew Cota threw a career-high 40 pass attempts against Colorado Mines. He completed 19 of the passes for 185 yards. Cota leads the team in rushing (413 yards), passing (1,297) and total offense (1,710).

Punting
Austin Pitchford moved up to third in the nation and second in the RMAC in punting averaging 45.3 yards per punt. Patrick Carney of New Mexico Highlands leads the nation at 46.0 yards per punt.
CSUP leads the league in net punting at 39.7 yards per punt. CMU ranks third at 37.3 yards.

Interceptions
The top two teams in the RMAC in passes intercepted will square off this weekend. CSUP leads the league with 16, and CMU is second with 15. Stephan Dickens of CSUP and Dustin Rivas are tied for the conference lead in interceptions with six.

Turnovers
Turnovers have played a big factor this season for the Mavericks and Saturday will be no different. Pueblo leads the RMAC in turnover margin at 1.56 and Mesa ranks second at 0.89.

Scoring
19 different players have scored for the Mavericks this season. Ryan Sheehan leads all players with 59 points (11 field goals, 26 extra points). Daryl Hawkins leads the squad in touchdowns with seven. CMU has scored 80 of its 266 points in the second quarter.

Playing with a Lead
Colorado Mesa is 4-0 this season when it is leading after the first quarter and 4-0 when it leads at halftime.

Looking Ahead
Colorado Mesa will play its final game of the season when it hosts Western State on Nov. 15. The game time has been moved up to 2 pm due to a possible conflict with hosting the RMAC Volleyball tournament.
