SEATTLE, Wash. – Junior
Charlie Dukes scored the game-winning goal with just two minutes and sixteen seconds left in the match in Colorado Mesa's 1-0 victory over No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles in the NCAA National Quarterfinal match. The Mavericks advance to play the NCAA National Semifinals for the first time in the program's short history.
"It felt amazing," Dukes said of the goal. "I haven't scored a lot of goals this season so having that one at obviously the quarterfinals is an amazing feeling. I couldn't have done it without the guys. I was lucky enough to be the person to put it away."
The goal was Dukes' third of the season and was assisted by both
Kevin Escobar and
Roy Abergil. Escobar crossed the ball in from the right wing where Abergil flicked it on to Dukes to put away.
The Mavericks survived one final push from the Golden Eagles in the final minute of the match with
Micah Conrads making one final save.
Conrads finished the match with two saves and faced 23 Cal State LA shots. The shutout was his sixth of the season and the 18
th of his career.
"There were a lot of shots," Conrads said. "Definitely my defense worked very hard this game as they always do. But thankfully for how hard they worked, Cal State L.A. wasn't putting that many good shots on goal."
The Golden Eagles outshot the Mavericks 23-12 in the match but only two were on goal while the Mavericks put five on goal.
Colorado Mesa had a great opportunity to get on the board early as
Tim Hofer's header in the opening minutes of the match hit the crossbar and
Stevie Palma's follow-up sailed high.
The Mavericks will head to Louisville, Kentucky for the NCAA Final Four where top ranked Charleston (W.Va.) awaits them in the first National Semifinal on December 4.
"We're 18-3-1 on the year," head coach
Todd Padgett said. "We've beaten seven, eight ranked teams in the country, so we're going to the Final Four expecting and thinking we're going to win it. Now whether that happens or not is yet to be seen, but this is a team capable of hoisting a trophy at the end, there's no doubt."
