Volleyball Set For RMAC Tournament Play

Complete Game Notes in PDF

RMAC Champions!

In large part due to their 15 game winning streak, Colorado Mesa volleyball was able to claim the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship over the weekend. It is the first time since 1998 that the Mavericks have won an RMAC Title.

Regional Rankings
In the most recent South Central regional poll, CMU sits at second, just behind MSU Denver. The first four teams in the rankings are RMAC teams. The upcoming conference tournament can play a major impact on how the final rankings play out. If the Mavericks become the top seed, they will host the regional tournament starting Nov. 20th.

Mavs Stay In Top-10
For the second straight week CMU has found themselves ranked in the top -10 nationally when the AVCA Top-25 coaches poll placed them at eighth in Div II.  This is the highest ranking in program history. Prior to the season, the Mavericks had never been ranked higher than No. 17 in the polls.  Colorado Mesa had been steadily moving up in the national rankings throughout the season. The preseason poll had them receiving votes, and they have moved up every week since then.

Weekend Recap
The Mavericks opened the weekend with a 3-1 decision over the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks. CMU dominated the first set 25-8 and won the second 25-2 before dropping a surprising third set. Colorado Mesa would respond to take the fourth set. Melissa Hess and Abby Ney each tallied 15 kills and hit above .400 in the match. In their final regular season match, the Colorado Mesa beat Adams State 3-1. Much like they did against the Skyhawks, CMU took the first two sets against the Grizzlies, before losing the third and then winning the fourth. Melissa Hess had 13 digs, while Jordyn Moody recorded 48 assists and had 11 digs on the evening.

Hess Named Player of Week
For the second week in a row and third time this season, senior middle blocker Melissa Hess has been named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Player of the Week. In the match against Fort Lewis Hess led the way recording 19.5 points on 15 kills, while hitting .455. Hess hit .455 with 13 kills against Adams State for a total of 28 kills on the weekend.

Undefeated at Home
For the first time in over ten years, Colorado Mesa volleyball finished the regular season without a loss at home. The last regular season home loss for the Mavericks was Nov. 8, 2013 when they fell to Western New Mexico in four sets. CMU will look to stay undefeated at home when they open RMAC Tournament play at home against UCCS Tuesday (Nov. 11).

Home Court Advantage
With Colorado Mesa winning the RMAC Championship, they have secured home court advantage throughout the tournament provided they win on Tuesday against UCCS. If they defeat UCCS they will host the final four beginning Friday.

Statistical Rankings
With their strong play throughout the season, Colorado Mesa has been able to  position themselves amongst the best in Div. II in a number of statistical categories. CMU ranks fifth in assists per set (13.76) and fourth in kills per set (14.69).  Their .880 win-loss percentage is good for the 17th best in the country.  Much like she has been all year, Jordyn Moody is sixth in Div. II in assists per set with 11.99.

Academic Honors
Senior setter Jordyn Moody was named to the RMAC First Team All-Academic Team. Moody has a 3.73 grade point average in criminal justice and psychology. Kricket Adleman, Hattie Gianinetti, Megan Gianinetti, Abby Ney, Christian Otzen, Audrey Steinkirchner and Meredith Whatley were named to  the all-academic honor roll.

Scouting UCCS
This is the first time the two teams are meeting this season and the only RMAC team the Mavericks have not played this year.  Colorado Mesa owns the 19-7 advantage when the two teams face off and are 10-1 when the Mountain Lions come to Grand Junction. The Mountain Lions 8-10 conference record was just enough to help them sneak into the tournament as the eight seed. In a must win scenario, UCCS was able to sweep the final weekend of the regular season to edge out Western New Mexico and Black Hills State for the final spot.  The Mountain Lions are a very young team with 10 freshman and only one senior.
