Box Score The No. 20 ranked Colorado Mesa volleyball team needed a come from behind victory tonight (Oct. 3) to take down the CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves.
The first set of the match was one the Mavericks would like to forget. The Mavericks fell behind early in the set 6-3. CSU-Pueblo would control most of the play before Colorado Mesa rallied to tie the score up at 23 on a kill from Audrey Steinkirchner. CSU-Pueblo would take the last two points of the set to win 25-23. The Mavericks were held to just a .180 hit percentage while the Thunderwolves hit .300.
The loss in the first match woke the Mavs up and they seized control of the rest of the match rallying to win the next three sets.
The Mavericks took the lead on the first point in the second set by a Casey Ball kill and would never give it back. The Mavs found themselves leading by five after an Abby Ney kill put them up 14-9. Steinkirchner's kill to end the set gave the Mavericks the 25-20 win. The Mavericks outhit the Thunderwolves .297 to .243.
The third set of the match was a much tighter affair for the two teams. The score was back and forth for the first portion of the set with both teams finding themselves tied at 15. An attack error by the Thunderwolves would give the Mavericks the 16-15 lead. The Mavericks controlled the rest of the set to win 25-19. The Mavericks were able to hold CSU-Pueblo to a .093 hitting percentage while hitting .217
Needing just one more win to seal the victory the Mavericks fell behind early before tying the score up at 10 in the fourth set. The Mavericks would then take the lead on another CSU-Pueblo attack error. The Mavericks would go on to win the set 25-19 giving them the 3-1 victory over the Thunderwolves. The Mavericks kept the Thunderwolves to a .000 hit percentage in the set while hitting .250 themselves.
Jordyn Mood had 50 assists and 12 digs on the night. Â Audrey Steinkirchner lead the way for the Mavs tonight hitting .381 with 20 kills. Mellissa Hess hit .273 with 9 kills and 10 points. Casey Ball and Erin Perez had double-doubles 13 and 12 kills and 10 and 12 digs respectively.
The Mavericks move to 6-1 in conference play and 12-3 overall.
Colorado Mesa remains on the road to play Western State Colorado tomorrow (October 4) at 7.
