Mavericks, Mountain Lions Settle for Tie

Box Score

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After a 24 hour delay, the Colorado Mesa Mavericks and the UC-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions still couldn't get things decided on the field and had to settle for a 1-1 tie.

"We did well defending and we are creating opportunities, now we just need to get that final piece to win the game," Maverick Coach Josh Pittman said about the game.

The Mavericks got on the board about midway through the first half when the Mountain Lions got called for a hand ball in the box, awarding CMU with a penalty kick.

Alan Hernandez took the PK and beat the goalkeeper on the left side to give CMU a 1-0 lead. The goal was Hernandez' first of the season.

Just a little over five minutes after the Mavericks goal, UCCS evened the score.

Mountain Lion James Roberts headed in a free kick from Cort Searls for his second goal of the season.

The score would remain that way for the final 80 plus minutes of the match.

The Mavericks had two good looks in the final minutes of the match.

Marco Escobar had a great look right at the end of regulation but his shot was deflected wide of the goal and Patrick LaPorta had an open look in the overtime period but his shot went high.

"We outshot them 15-8 and we had a couple of great chances at the end, they don't come too often so we need to put them away," Pittman added about finishing shots.

The tie puts the Mavericks at 2-3-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in RMAC play while the Mountain Lions move to 1-1-2 on the year and 0-0-2 in the RMAC.

Colorado Mesa will take on CSU-Pueblo on Friday at Walker Field starting at 3pm.

"CSU-Pueblo is very well coached and have very good players who are fun to watch. We will have to recover and get our legs under us heading into the weekend."
