Mavs Sweep Mustangs in Saturday DH

Colorado Mesa (17-10-1, 15-6-1 RMAC) swept Western New Mexico University in a softball doubleheader on Saturday in Silver City, NM winning 8-7 in game one and 3-2 in game two of a four game series. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday to close out the four-game set.

CMU came from behind in game one after giving up six runs in the bottom of the third inning to the Mustangs. Trailing 6-2 after three, the Mavericks put up two runs in fifth, sixth and seventh inning to take a 8-6 lead. WNMU scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to pull to within 8-7, before the Mavericks closed it out for the victory.

Makayla Kovac hit at two-run homerun in the fifth to start the comeback. In the sixth inning Lisa Pille blasted a two-run shot to centerfield. The seventh inning the Mavs scored two runs on one hit, both unearned. A fielding error and wild pitch by the Mustangs pushed the Mavericks lead to 8-6.

Kovac and Pille each went 2 for 4 with two RBI and one run each. Jessica Severinsen picked up win number 12 (12-3) pitching a complete game.

In game two the Mavericks took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Megan Smith. The lead held up until the fourth inning when the Mustangs took a 2-1 lead with two singles and an RBI double.

The Mustang lead held up until the sixth inning when CMU rallied to overtake WNMU. Jessica Severinsen hit a one-out double to left field, followed by a single up the middle by Megan Smith scoring pinch runner Camille Brimhall. With two out Tawnee Woosley singled through the left side to load the bases. Lindsay Drayer's bunt single scored the go-ahead run for a 3-2 advantage.

WNMU collected just one hit in the final two innings as CMU picked up two, one-run victories.

Starter Ashley Pulido went 3.0 innings allowing just one hit and striking out three. Courtney Shreves pitched the final 4.0 innings and picked up the victory. Shreves allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, walked two and struck out one.

Severinsen and Smith each went 3 for 4 from the plate.

CMU and WNMU will play a two on Sunday, beginning at 11 a.m.
