Colorado Mesa (18-11-1, 16-7-1 RMAC) and host Western New Mexico University (14-23, 11-15 RMAC) split Sunday's doubleheader with the Mavericks winning game one 5-2, before falling in the series finale 5-4 in eight innings. CMU took the four game series, sweeping the Mustangs in Saturday's doubleheader.
CMU took advantage of a fielding error by the Mustangs to score a run in the third inning. WNMU took a 2-1 lead in the fourth scoring two runs on four hits. CMU took back the lead in the fifth on a double by Lisa Pille and an RBI double by Makayla Kovac. Jessica Severinsen's two-out homerun to centerfield scored two runs and CMU jumped back on top 4-2. A solo homerun by Rachel Boothe in the sixth secured the 5-2 victory.
Jessica Severinsen improved to 13-3 on the year with the victory going 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, four walks and four strikeouts. Ashley Pulido picked up her first save going 1.1 innings, giving up two runs on two hits.
Game two went to the Mustangs in a 5-4 eight-inning win to close out the series. CMU scored three runs in the second inning and the Mustangs answered back with thee in the bottom half of the second. CMU took a 4-3 lead in the fifth and WNMU tied the game back up in the bottom half. The Mustangs clinched the victory in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double to right center.
Caitlin Pattee's two run double scored CMU's first two runs. Camille Brimhall's single to center gave CMU a 3-0 lead. Severinsen's RBI double in the fifth gave CMU a 4-3 lead. Rachel Booth went 3 for 4 in game four. Severinsen was 2 for 4 from the plate.
Pulido (1.1 innings) started the game before being relieved by Courtney Shreves who pitched 2.2 innings. Severinsen pitched the final 3.2 innings.
CMU's 'Swing for Life' annual cancer awareness game will take place Saturday at Bergman Field. CMU will host Colorado Christian and CSU-Pueblo on Saturday and Sunday. CMU will play CCU at 10 am and CSU-Pueblo at 2 pm on Saturday. CCU and CSUP will play each other at Noon on Saturday.
