Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse (2-7, 2-3) improved to 2-7 on the year and 2-3 in WILA action defeating Adams State University (3-5, 2-4 WILA) 17-7 at Walker Field on the campus of Colorado Mesa.
Adams State scored the first goal of the game on a free position shot for a 1-0 lead. CMU tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Alison Stone (Ashley Eickoff assist). The score remained tied until the 21:43 mark when Coryann Ledford scored (Eickoff assist) for a 2-1 lead and the Mavericks never trailed again in the contest. CMU's four consecutive goals included Paige Amme's goal (Kelly Cronin assist) and Stone's second of the half (Amme assist) for a 4-1 CMU lead with 15:30 remaining in the first half.
Adams State broke the drought with back-to-back goals to pull to within one (3-4) with just under 10-minutes remaining. The two teams traded the next four goals as CMU maintained a one goal advantage. CMU's Lexie Chavez and Allie Henderson each scored the Mavs. Henderson's coming on a free position shot. Following a goal by Adams to again pull to within one goal, CMU closed out the half on three straight goals by Henderson, Kendall Tillman and Cronin n the final 2:40, for a 9-5 halftime lead.
CMU dominated the second half outscoring the Grizzlies 8-2, holding ASU to just eight second-period shots. ASU opened the second period as they did the start of the game; scoring on a free position shot (9-6). CMU went on a three-goal run by Henderson, Eickoff (Henderson assist) and Kelsey Krebs (Amme assist) to double their lead, 12-6. ASU scored their seventh and final goal on a free position shot at the 18:30 mark of the second period.
CMU went on its longest goal streak of the game, scoring five unanswered goals to close out the game. Krebs, Henderson, Chavez scored two goals (Tayler Lansdown assist) and Eickoff all scored in the final 17:15 of the game.
CMU's 17 goals are the most this season. The Mavericks were 20 of 22 on clears and outshot the Grizzlies 39-24. Allie Henderson led all players with 4 goals on six shots. Lexie Chavez scored three goals and Ashley Eickoff, Alison Stone and Kelsey Krebs each tallied two goals each.
CMU will travel to Regis University on Saturday, April 13 for a matchup with the Rangers. The game is scheduled to begin 1 pm in Denver.
