Colorado Mesa improved to 24-15-1 overall (22-11-1 RMAC) with a doubleheader sweep over visiting Chadron State College by the score of 8-1 and 6-0. The loss dropped the Eagles to 14-22 overall and 12-17 in RMAC action.
Taylor Gross went 3 for 3 with three RBI and one run in game one for the Mavericks. Gross hit her first homerun of the season in the third inning. CMU led 4-1 after three innings scoring three runs in the third on five hits.
The Mavericks put the game away in the fifth inning scoring four runs on four hits. Singles by Jessica Severinsen, Megan Smith and Lisa Pille eventually all scored. Gross' two-out double to left field scored two runs.
Severinsen picked up win number 17 (17-5) on the year going 7.0 innings allowing one run on four hits, two walks and striking out seven.
Severinsen and Smith each went 2 for 4 from the plate. Pille finished 2 for 3 with two RBI.
In game two the Mavericks shutout the Eagles 6-0 scoring three runs in the first, two runs in the third and a run in the fourth to complete the sweep.
Jessica Severinsen hit a two-run homerun in the first after an RBI triple by Makayla Kovac scoring Taylor Gross (walk).
Severinsen hit her second two-run homerun in the third, pushing the lead to 5-0. Severinsen's homer to left center was her 12th on the year. CMU added a run in the fourth on a sac fly by Lindsay Drayer scored Tawnee Woosley.
Severinsen went 2 for 3 with four RBI and two runs.
Ashley Pulido (2-2) pitched 5.0 innings for the victory. Pulido allowed three hits and struck out two. Courtney Shreves threw the final two innings giving up two hits and had one strikeout.
CMU and Chadron will play a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
