Mavs drop WILA game at Ft. Lewis 16-9

Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse (3-10, 3-6 WILA) team fell to Fort Lewis College (7-7, 6-4 WILA) 16-9 in league action on Friday afternoon in Durango.

The Skyhawks scored the first two goals in the contest in the first two minutes of action. CMU's Lexie Chavez cut the deficit in half on an unassisted goal at the 26:25 mark. FLC put together back-to-back goals 1:30 apart for a 4-1 advantage. Kelsey Krebs scored for the Mavericks (2-4) and again the Skyhawks came back with two straight goals and a 6-2 lead. With 9:34 remaining in the first half CMU put together consecutive goals to close within two goals, 4-6. Allie Henderson scored followed by Tayler Lansdown fifth goal of the year (Alison Stone assist).

FLC pushed the lead to 9-4 before CMU closed out the half with goals by Alison Stone and Kelsey Krebs (Henderson-assist). The Skyhawks scored with 17-seconds left in the half for a 10-6 halftime lead.

Ft. Lewis extended the lead to 13-6 scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Freshman Ashley Eickoff notched her 28th goal on the year (Krebs-assist). After a goal by FLC the Mavericks would score on back-to-back shots by Lexie Chavez on a free position shot and a Tayler Lansdown (Eickoff-assist) goal. The Skyhawks would clinch the win with two final goals in the final five minutes for a 16-9 win.

CMU registered 16 ground balls and 17 draw controls. The Mavericks were 11 of 17 on clears and 1 for 4 on free position shots.

Lauren Wells and Kady Herzog each played one half with Wells getting the starting nod. Wells allowed 10 goals and had two saves. Herzog gave up six goals and recorded seven saves.

CMU will travel to Alamosa for their final regular league game on Saturday against Adams State. CMU's final game will be at home on Tuesday, April 30 at 7 pm against non-conference opponent Colorado College.
