Colorado Mesa softball team (22-15-1, 20-11-1 RMAC) dropped its first series of the season taking one game in a four-game set at Adams State University.
Sunday afternoon the Mavericks dropped a doubleheader falling 4-1 in game one and 4-3 in the series finale. Saturday the Mavs dropped game one of the series 9-1 before bouncing back to take game two, 8-5.
Game one on Sunday the Mavs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring one run on three hits. The Grizzlies went on top 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth on four hits. Two runs were unearned after a throwing error by CMU. Adams scored an unearned run in the sixth for a 4-1 lead.
CMU had six hits in the game with Megan Brown going 2 for 3 with one RBI. Ashley Pulido was credited with the loss, going 4.1 inning allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and striking out five.
In the series finale the Mavericks took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a two-run homerun down the right field line by Jessica Severinsen. CMU held the Grizzlies scoreless in the bottom of the inning allowing one hit, a single to right center, but he runner was thrown out trying to advance to second.
Adams State took back the lead in their half of the sixth scoring two runs on three hits for a 4-3 lead. CMU was shut down in the seventh on three consecutive outs.
Jessica Severinsen was 3 for 3 with two runs and two RBI.
Starting pitcher Courtney Shreves went 4. 0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Ashley Pulido took the loss going 2.0 innings and giving up two runs on four hits.
Saturday CMU fell in game one 9-1 (run-rule) in five innings. The Mavericks won game two of the series on Saturday afternoon 8-5.
CMU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first on a three-run blast by Megan Smith. Adams State answered back in the bottom of the second scoring four runs on four hits for a 4-3 lead. ASU extended the lead to 5-3 after three innings.
In the fourth inning the Mavs put the Grizzlies away scoring three runs on a Makayla Kovac three-run homerun to centerfield. Kovac hit a solo shot in the sixth for a 7-5 lead. CMU tacked on a run in the seventh on an RBI double by Megan Brown.
CMU returns home for its final regular season series this Saturday and Sunday. The Mavericks will host Chadron State College beginning Saturday at Noon. Sunday is 'Senior Day'. Camille Brimhall, Taylor Gross, Lisa Pille and Megan Smith will be honored before game one on Sunday, scheduled for 11 a.m.
