The Colorado Mesa University baseball team concluded their four-game RMAC series with the Colorado Christian Cougars on Saturday night at Runyon Field in Pueblo, CO. The Mavericks swept the doubleheader winning by scores of 28-8 and 9-4 to claim the RMAC Regular Season Championship.
The Mavericks captured their sixth championship in the past eight seasons and their second consecutive title. This is the 20th overall RMAC Regular Season Championship the Mavericks have won.
In the opener, the Mavericks hammered out 24 hits with seven going for extra-bases and capitalized on four Cougar errors in a 28-8 victory.
Every Maverick starter had at least one hit in the game and senior third baseman
Colton Little finished the game 4-for-6 with four runs scored, three doubles and six runs driven in.
Austin Kaiser and
Erik Kozel each had three hits and
Kevin Mitchell blasted his fourth homerun of the season.
Joey Danner picked up his seventh win of the season on the mound. Danner went five innings and allowed one run on eight hits, walked none and struck out one. Luke Anderson,
Matt Allen, and
Tamatoa Demello pitched the final four innings in relief.
In the RMAC clincher, Colorado Mesa scored in every inning except the first and seventh en route to a 9-4 win. The Mavericks scored their runs on ten hits with Colorado Christian committing nine costly errors.
Outfielder
Garrett Carpenter extended his hitting streak to 21 games after missing the last six games with a finger injury. Carpenter was 1-for-4 in the game.
Shortstop
Nate Robertson went 4-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Kyle Davis,
Cody Lahman,
Dakota Behr and
Aaron Corwin combined to strikeout ten Colorado Chrstian Cougars in the game with Corwin recording the final three outs in the game.
Colorado Mesa improved their record to 34-6 on the season and 28-2 in the RMAC while the Cougars fall to 6-33 and 4-26 in RMAC games.
The Mavericks will return home for their annual 'Little League Family Night/Record Attendance Night' on Friday against the Regis Rangers at Suplizio Field. Colorado Rockies mascot Dinger the Dinosaur will be making an appearance at the game. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm.
