Mavericks Steal Doubleheader From Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Colorado Mesa University baseball team changed some of their travel plans and played the Colorado Christian COugars in a doubleheader in Pueblo, CO at Runyon Field. The Mavericks won both ends of the doubleheader, winning by scores of 11-1 and 3-1. Colorado Mesa, ranked fourth in this week's Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, improves to 32-6 on the season and 26-2 in the RMAC while the Cougars fall to 6-31, 4-24 in RMAC games.

The story of the day was stolen bases for CMU as they stole eight bases in the first game and four in the second game. With the 12 combined stolen bases, the Mavericks now have the single season stolen base record with 114, eclipsing the 2009 squad who had 113.

In game one of the doubleheader, Colorado Mesa jumped ahead with four runs in the first and never looked back in the 11-1 victory. The Mavericks had 13 hits with three going for extra bases. They also continued to show their speed on the base paths, swiping eight bases in the game, three coming from Erik Kozel.

Nolan Snell had a nice bounce back performance in the series opener. Snell pitched seven innings and allowed one run on seven hits, walked four and struck out eight. He improves to 6-1 on the season and 22 wins in his career, moving him into second place on the all-time list.

Maverick infielder Braden Box was 5-for-6 in the game with two runs scored and drove in three. He had two doubles and stole two bases in the game. Box is now the all-time stolen base leader in Colorado Mesa history with 67 in his career. He passes Justin Little who had 66 from 2006-2009.

Mitch Corwin finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and two runs driven in.

In the nightcap, the Mavericks pushed across three runs in the third and came away with a 3-1 victory. The Mavericks outhit the Cougars 8-4 in the game and played errorless defense in the win.

Senior righty Matt Williams pitched the complete game, earning his fifth win of the season. Williams went seven innings and allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out three. He pitched out of a two-on nobody out jam and came away unscaithed.

Justin Rosales' two-run single in third broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game-winning hit.

Erik Kozel finished the game with two hits as well.

The Mavericks and Cougars will conclude their series tomorrow at Runyon Field in Pueblo. The two teams will play a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30pm.
