Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse (1-3, 1-2 WILA) notched its first win of the year beating visiting McKendree University (1-3, 0-1) 15-4 in Western Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association action on Saturday afternoon at Walker Field.
CMU's offense exploded in the first half scoring a season high 11 goals in the first 30 minutes of action. The Mavs scored the first four goals of the contest with Allie Henderson giving CMU a 1-0 lead (23:41). Kelly Cronin notched her first goal of the year at the 21:27 mark on an assist by Keri Kopchik. Ashley Eickoff pushed the lead to 3-0 on her 10th goal of the season. Henderson found the back of the net again at the 18:16 mark for a 4-0 CMU advantage.
McKendree got on the board at 17:25 in the first period to close the gap to 4-1. CMU scored seven consecutive goals in the next 16:36 to close out the first half. Kendall Tillman and Tayler Lansdown scored their first goals of the year, on assists from Henderson. Kelsey Krebs scored next for a 7-1 CMU lead. Ashley Eickoff continued her scoring streak with her second goal of the half. Lexie Chavez and Coryann Ledford extended the lead to 10-1. Tillman close out the half scoring on a free position shot as CMU took an 11-1 lead into the half.
McKendree opened the second half on a good note, scoring their second goal. CMU answered back with two straight goals by Keri Kopchik, one a free position shot and a few minutes later an unassisted goal for a 13-2 lead. The Bearcats broke the streak on a goal by Krystin Major's second straight goal.
CMU's final two goals by Melissa Niedfelt and Lauren Elliott were first goals each for the duo this season. Elliott's was a free position shot for a 15-3 advantage. McKendree closed out the contest with its final goal with 25-seconds remaining, ending the game with a final 15-4 victory for CMU.
Eleven Mavericks scored on the day including multiple goals by Henderson, Eickoff, Tillman and Kopchik.
CMU outshot the Bearcats 30-9 and held a 32-16 groundball advantage. CMU had just 10 turnovers in the contest to the Bearcats' 25 total turnovers.
Lauren Well picked up her first win on the season registering three saves.
Next up for the Mavericks; a trip to Florida for three games beginning on Friday, March 16 at Saint Michael's College. On Saturday, CMU will play Saint Leo University and close out the road swing at Florida Southern College on Tuesday.
