CMU softball splits Friday doubleheader at Regis

Colorado Mesa (9-6-1, 7-1-1 RMAC) split a doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Denver on the campus of Regis University (2-17, 1-8 RMAC). The four game series was moved to a Friday/Saturday due to a forecast of inclement weather. CMU won game one 4-2 before falling 5-3 in game two.

CMU won game one 4-2 scoring two runs in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie through five innings. Regis scored a run in the bottom of the second and the Mavericks answered back with two runs in the third for a 2-1 lead. Makayla Kovac led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. Megan Smith's one-out double to left center scored Kovac. Rachel Boothe hit a single to centerfield and Smith scored the second run of the inning.

Regis tied the game in the bottom of the fifth scoring one run on three hits, while stranding three runners.

In the top of the sixth, back-to-back singles by Camille Brimhall and Nicole Robinson gave CMU runners on first and second. A wild pitch advanced the runners and a sacrifice fly by Lisa Pille scored Brimhall. A double by Kovac scored the go-ahead run as CMU held off the Rangers in the sixth and seventh for the victory.

Jessica Severinsen improved to 7-1 on the year with the victory. She allowed two runs on eight hits and struck out four batters.

In game two Regis scored three runs in the first inning and one run in the second to jump out to a 4-0 lead. CMU scored a run in the third on a sac fly RBI by Kovac scoring Robinson (double). A run in the fourth extended the Ranger lead to 5-1. The Mavericks were held scoreless until the top of the seventh when the Mavs rallied for two runs on an RBI double by Jessica Severinsen scoring Kovac and Robinson. Regis closed out the inning on a line-out to secure the win.

Nicole Robinson went 4 for 4 in game two. Courtney Shreves took the loss for the Mavericks, falling to 2-4 on the year.

The two teams will match up on Saturday for a schedule doubleheader to begin at 11 a.m.
