Mavs beat Yellowjackets, Roadrunners in RMAC play

Colorado Mesa men's tennis team opened Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play with back-to-back dual wins over Montana State Billings and Metro State University. CMU beat Montana State 5-4 on Friday afternoon in Billings. Saturday in Billings the Mavericks beat Metro 7-2 to improve to 11-11 overall and 2-0 in RMAC play.

Montana State-Billings took an early 2-1 lead winning at number 2 and 3 doubles, including a 9-8 win over CMU's #2 doubles team of Andres Garcia-Rojas and Andres Hernandez. The Mavs' number one doubles team of Jordan Lyden and Spencer Weinberg defeated MSUB's number one team 8-6 for the lone doubles point.

CMU took four of the six singles matches to secure the victory. Lyden and Weinberg won at number one and two singles respectively. Lyden won a three set match, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-1 over Navin Marimuthu. Weinberg also pulled out a three set win over Christian Fischer, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Andres Garcia-Rojas won at number three singles in straight sets. MSUB took singles victories at number four and five singles to tie the dual at 4-4.  No. 6 Andres Hernandez clinched the dual victory beating Josh Hedderig 7-5, 6-3 for the deciding point.

Saturday morning CMU defeated Metro State University 7-2, beating the Roadrunners by sweeping all three doubles matches and winning four of the six singles contests. Weinberg (#2), Garcia-Rojas (#3), Taylor Macres (#4), and Brason Hollabaugh (#5) each posted singles wins. Three of the four singles victories for CMU went the distance (three sets).

CMU will continue league play on the road this weekend on the Front Range. The Mavs will play Colorado Christian, CSU-Pueblo and Western New Mexico. CMU will play a non-league match at Colorado College on Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs.
