Jessica Severinsen's two-on, two-out, walk-off blast to right field lifted the Mavericks to a 7-5 victory in game two of Friday's doubleheader against UC-Colorado Springs at Bergman Field. CMU dropped game one of the doubleheader 4-1.
Severinsen went 2 for 4 in game two with 5 RBI and two runs scored. Jessica earned the victory entering the game in the sixth inning with the Mavs trailing 5-4, one out and bases loaded. Severinsen struck out two batters to close out the inning. She set down the side in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh Becca Smith came on in relief for UCCS starter Jessica Belsterling and walked Megan Brown. Lindsay Drayer's sac pinch hit advanced Brown to second. A fly out to left field had the Mountain Lions one out away from a Friday sweep. A walk to Makayla Kovac gave CMU runners at first and second with two outs. Severinsen faced a full count before ending the game on her sixth homerun of the season.
Severinsen, Kovac and Megan Smith each recorded two hits in game two. Severinsen hit a two-run homerun in the first inning as CMU took a 3-0 lead after one inning. CMU added one run in the third to push the lead to 4-0.
UCCS scored two runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
Lisa Pille and Tawnee Woosley had a hit each.
UC-Colorado Springs won game one 4-1 behind Becca Smith's complete game victory. Smith struck out 10 CMU hitters. The Mountain Lions scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added two more runs in the fifth to secure the win. CMU's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth off a solo homerun by Kovac.
Severinsen went 5.0 innings allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out six. Ashley Pulido pitched the final two innings allowing two hits.
CMU (14-9-1, 12-5-1 RMAC) and UCCS (18-10-1, 13-6 RMAC) will close out the four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one begins at 11 a.m.
