Colorado Mines (22-3-1, 13-1 RMAC) scored four runs in the first two innings and never trailed on the way to a 5-2 win over visiting Colorado Mesa (12-8-1, 10-4-1 RMAC) in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action on Friday morning in Golden.
The Orediggers' two runs in the first inning were both unearned as CMU was credited with a fielding error with two outs, resulting in two runs. Mines added two more in the bottom half of the second on a two-run homerun to left field by Macy Jones.
Colorado Mesa's Makayla Kovac cut the Oredigger lead in half on a two-run homerun to left center scoring Taylor Gross (single). Mines got one run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double to extend the lead to 5-2 through four innings.
Mines held the Mavericks to just one hit in the final three innings; a single by Lisa Pille in the seventh, closing out the game with three consecutive outs for a 5-2 victory.
Gross and Pille each registered two hits and Kovac's homerun notched the five total hits for the Mavericks. Mines' Kelly Unkrich improved to 14-0 on the year, striking out seven Mavericks.
Courtney Shreves started the game going 4.0 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits. Shreves walked two batters and struck out four. Jessica Severinsen pitched the final two innings, striking out five.
CMU will play Metro State at 2 p.m. today in this weekend's pod format. CMU will play Mines and Metro in single games on Saturday.
