Colorado Mesa women's lacrosse (1-5) dropped a non-conference game at Saint Leo (5-5) in overtime 12-11 on Sunday afternoon in Saint Leo, Fla.
CMU scored first on a goal by Coryann Ledford on a free position shot at 27:49 in the first half. The Lions scored the next three goals including two goals just 18-seconds apart to take a 3-1 lead. CMU tied the game at 3-3 on goals by Kelly Cronin and Kelsey Krebs with just over 20-minutes left in the first half.
Saint Leo scored two of the next three goals for a 5-4 advantage before the Mavericks went on a 4-0 goal run to take an 8-5 halftime lead. Ledford and Cronin each notched their second goal of the day to take a 6-5 lead. Cronin's came on a free position shot. Lexie Chavez and Morgan Nance found the back of the net on consecutive goals with 4:34 left in the half. CMU took that 8-5 lead into intermission.
Saint Leo opened the second period with a goal to pull to within two, (8-6). CMU answered back on a free position shot goal by Ashley Eickoff. The Lions scored on back-to-back goals to cut CMU's lead to just one (9-8). The two teams traded goals and with CMU leading 10-8 the Lions scored two goals to tie the game at 10-10 with 5:26 remaining in regulation.
CMU's Allie Henderson would score at the 3:49 mark to give CMU an 11-10 lead. Saint Leo tied the game with 1:32 left to send the game into overtime.
Saint Leo's Joanna Chadwick scored the winning goal in overtime with 1:51 left and held on for the victory, 12-11.
Kelly Cronin led the way with three goals. Allie Henderson led the team in overall points, notching a goal and three assists for a four point performance.
Saint Leo led the shot count 29-28, and won more ground balls 29-27. The Lions took charge off of the draw, winning 17-of-27, and led the count in shots-on-goal 25-23.
Lauren Wells played all 66:00 minutes for the Mavericks registering 13 saves.
CMU will play at Florida Southern College on Tuesday.
